The Jasper County Airport in Rensselaer will be a busy place on Friday, May 10th, as Aviation Career Day Open House from eight a.m. until three o’clock, will be taking place. Additional parking will be available across from the airport at the Jasper County Fairgrounds. Airport Manager Ray Seif, has information on what will be happening at the airport, and he said one area school corporation will be offering an aviation course as part of their curriculum this fall.
An amendment to the county’s wind ordinance, as recommended by the plan commission, was presented to the Jasper County Commissioners at their May meeting. The recommended changes from the subcommittee and plan commission passed as presented. The no wind turbine zone, as Commissioner Kendell Culp will talk about, is all of the county north of County Road 1200 South, which begins two miles south of State Road 16. Commissioner Culp explains what the new changes will include.
Saint Joseph’s College continues to raise funds through their “128 Core Partners” Program, a campaign to raise a certain amount of money per year for the next three years, to cover the expenses of SJC’s journey back to health and vitality. Electronics Recycling Day, for Jasper County residents and businesses, as well as residents and businesses from adjacent counties to Jasper, will be this Saturday, from eight a.m. until noon. Jasper County REMC Market Member Services Coordinator Stephanie Johnson, has more information.
A second annual fundraiser for the future Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer will be held in the area in early June, and one of the special guests will be a nationally known basketball legend. Vice President for Saint Joe Bill Hogan comments.
The building of a new fire department in Wheatfield Township has, for the third time, been delayed. The township came to the most recent Jasper County Commissioners meeting to open bids for the construction of such a facility. In each of the two previous times, when bids were asked for, they came in over budget. Commissioner Kendell Culp comments.
The first anniversary of the Jasper County Recovery House will be later this month. The Recovery House, for young men addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, is a short term facility located about seven miles west of Rensselaer. Sheriff Pat Williamson said four staff members are at the site at all times, and he said he has been pleased with the results. The Sheriff said the men work the first half of their day at a local job and the rest of the day are being treated for their addiction and taking part in faith related studies. After a short time here they are transferred to a facility in Elkhart. He had these comments about the Recovery House.
